Grade 5 - Division - Long Division with a 2 Digit Divisor, No Remainder

Today, we're focusing on the long division strategy, a method that many of us learned in school. This approach, while efficient, can be challenging for younger students as it doesn't always reinforce a deep understanding of place value. In long division, students follow a sequence of steps: divide, multiply, subtract, and bring down (often remembered with a mnemonic like "Dirty Monkeys Smell Bad").

This method is effective for dividing larger numbers but can become complex when the divisor is not a basic fact students know well. The key is in breaking down the problem step by step, often using tools like a ratio table to handle tougher multiplication facts.
